Several means "a small number (of)", usually between 3 and 9. Several is similar to (A) FEW, but has more "positive" meaning. It is either a determiner or a pronoun.

1. Patterns

1.1. Several + plural noun

Ex: There was a bad accident in the street outside our house: several people were injured.

1.2. Several + (of ... )

Ex:
(1) I know Hong Kong very well. Several of my friends live there.
(2) "Can I borrow a pen?" "Yes - help yourself. There are several on my desk."
