Exclamations

We use exclamations to express our feelings or emotions about something.

Here are some examples of exclamations in use:
(1) "What a beautiful dress!" "Good heavens! $500 for dress like this." "My goodness!"

Some exclamations are special "emotion words" (sometimes called "interjections"). For example:
(1) oh /əʊ/ interest, surprise.
Ex: Oh, how nice to see you! | Oh, look - it's raining.

(2) ah /ɑː/ satisfaction, recognition.
Ex: Ah, there he is!

(3) hey /heɪ/ calling for attention.
Ex: Hey! Just look at that! (not polite)

(4) ooh /uː/ pleasure.
Ex: Ooh, how lovely!

(5) ow /aʊ/ pain.
Ex: Ow, that really hurts! (also ouch /aʊtʃ/)

(6) ugh /ʌh/ disgust.
Ex: Ugh, this tastes awful!

Oh is by far the most common of these words. We often use it before other words, as in: Oh yes, Oh yeah, Oh well, Oh God, Oh I see, Oh right.
