Vocative

Vocatives are the words we use to name or to refer to people when talking to them. They help us to be friendly or respectful:
(a) Friendly and familiar: Suzy, Max, Jack, you guys (U.S.)
(b) Respectful and polite: Mrs Brown, Mr Joe, Sir, Madam

Very often we do not need to use a vocative at all when talking to someone in English. This is not usually impolite. On the other hand, some vocatives (for example: you) are impolite: Come here, you!
