Collocation

 What is "collocation"?

Collocation refers to the way words pattern together in speech and writing. For example, we prefer to say:

  • a bunch of flower (but: a clump of trees)
  • take care (not: have care)
  • do your homework (not: make your homework)
  • arrive at (not: arrive to)
  • go wrong (but: come true)

Collocations are not part of grammar, but they make use of grammar, and are part of what it means to use English naturally.
