What is apposition?

Apposition is a relation between two noun phrases which describe the same thing, person, etc. One of the phrases is a modifier of the other.

Examples:
  1. Donald John Trump, the 45th President of the United States from 2017 to 2021, often made headlines with his unconventional approach to politics and communication.

  2. My friend lives in Texas, a state in the United States of America.

  3. The next train, the 9:45 to Seoul, leaves from Platform 4.
Note: Often the phrases in apposition are separated by a comma (,).
