Afraid


 What is "afraid"?

Afraid is a useful adjective that appears with different adjective patterns.

Form1: subject + be + afraid + of + object
Ex: She is afraid of monsters.

Form2: subject + be + afraid + to + verb ...
Ex: They are afraid to jump into the river.

Form3: subject + be + afraid + (that) + clause
Ex: I'm afraid (that) I'll miss the train.

Notice the use of afraid (that) for reporting "bad news":
I'm afraid (that) your flight has been delayed.

Afraid can't modify nouns. We use other adjective with similar meaning instead, frightened.
