And

 What is "and"?

And is a coordinating conjunction. The special symbol & is sometimes used for and. It expresses the general idea of "addition".

1. And used to express addition

1. Sam received two emails and a postcard.
2. A man and a dog can become best friends.

2. Particular meanings

And can also have more particular meanings of (A) time ("and then"), (B) reason ("and so"), and (C) condition ("if").

(A) time ("and then")

Sam washed and wiped the dishes. (= "Sam washed the dishes and then wiped them")

(B) reason ("and so")

It rained hard, and we all got wet. (= "... and so we all got wet")

(C) condition ("if")

You scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours.
(A saying which means "If you help me, I'll help you.")

In speech, we sometimes use and in place of to (before an infinitive). Ex: I'll try and help you. (= "I'll try to help you.")

And in expressions like up and down, in and out, round and round, again and again, on and on expresses the meaning of "repeating" or "continuing".
Ex: There are thousands and thousands of books in the library. (= "many thousands")

And is also used in agreement.
