Away



Away is an adverb of place or motion (or movement). Away from is a preposition.

1. Place

Away = "not here" or "not there".
Ex:
(1) On a phone call: "Is Mr. Brown there?" "No, I'm sorry, he's away on vacation.
(2) Keep away! This animal is dangerous.
(3) She lives fifty miles away. [See Distance]

2. Motion (or movement)

Away = the opposite of "towards here" or "towards there".
(1) The dog was afraid, and ran away.
(2) Please go away. I'm busy.

3. Away from

Away from (preposition) means the opposite of at or towards.
Ex:
(1) He kicked the ball towards the goalkeeper, who furtunately pushed it away from the goal.
(2) Sam is away from shool today. He's feeling ill.
